Our Story

The Century City Canoe Club began in 2005 with little more than a shipping container on the banks of the Century City canals and a shared passion for paddling. Recognising the enthusiasm of the growing community, the Century City Property Owners' Association (CCPOA) supported the club by installing simple wooden boat racks beneath shade cloth, giving members a place to store their boats.

Life at the club was wonderfully uncomplicated. Inside the container were just two well-used sofas where paddlers could relax before and after outings. Thanks to the generosity of one of our members, who worked in the solar heating industry, we even built an outdoor solar-heated shower—an innovation that quickly became a favourite after a hard paddle.Every week, members gathered for the club time trial, followed by refreshments and good conversation.

Friendships were forged, stories were shared, and a strong sense of community took root. Our facilities may have been modest, but they represented something far greater: a club built by passionate paddlers, supported by a caring community, and united by a love of the water.

A significant milestone came in 2010 when the Century City Property Owners' Association constructed a clubhouse to be shared by three sporting codes: the Century City Canoe Club, the Century City Athletics Club—founded by one of our paddlers—and a Touch Rugby Club. This new facility provided a permanent home for the club and created an environment where sport and community could thrive together.With improved facilities and growing interest in paddlesport, membership expanded rapidly. The club flourished, producing elite athletes who competed at the highest levels, while continuing to nurture intermediate and recreational paddlers.

Throughout its growth, the club has remained committed to its founding ethos: creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to discover the joys of paddling.Today, the Century City Canoe Club takes great pride in introducing newcomers to the sport and helping them experience the rewards of competition, participation, fitness, and camaraderie. Whether striving for podium finishes or simply enjoying time on the water, our members share a love of being outdoors, exploring the canals and waterways, and escaping the pressures of everyday life—away from the madding crowd.From humble beginnings on the canal bank to a thriving paddling community, the Century City Canoe Club continues to build on the vision, enthusiasm, and friendships that inspired its creation more than two decades ago.
